Mole & Pigmented Skin Lesion Scanning Service

We now offer a quick, easy, and painless analysis of moles and pigmented skin lesions in selected branches, operated by ScreenCancer UK Ltd. The service is delivered in our branches, using state-of-the-art scanning technology.

Scans are carried out by our staff, who have been trained to a high standard and are confident and competent in using this technology.

Scans are then analysed by highly experienced Dermatology Specialists who work with ScreenCancer UK.

How much does the service cost?

The first mole/pigmented skin lesion will cost £40 to be scanned. Each additional mole/pigmented skin lesion scanned during a consultation will cost £20.

Please note - should you wish to have more than four moles scanned we recommend that you speak to your GP.

Our Mole Scanning Service is run by ScreenCancer. The fee that you pay for this service is paid to ScreenCancer.

What to expect during your scan

1) A member of our Pharmacy team will talk with you, in a private consultation room. You'll need to complete a short questionnaire to assess your risk factors for skin cancer, and a consent form.

2) You will be asked to identify the mole(s) or pigmented skin lesion(s) that you would like scanned. Please note that we cannot advise you on this.

3) We'll take a scan of the mole(s) or pigmented lesion(s), using a ScreenCancer dermatoscopic imaging device. Please note that makeup & fake tan needs to be removed for a scan to take place.

The process takes around 20 minutes.

What happens after your scan?

1) Your scans are sent to ScreenCancer UK, and will be analysed by a Dermatology Specialist for signs of malignant melanoma, with a report sent to you within one week.

2) If the scan shows that your mole(s) or pigmented skin lesion(s) is/are at risk, a ScreenCancer Dermatology Nurse will contact you to discuss the next steps.

Please note that the service doesn’t provide a diagnosis of skin cancer.

Service Limitations

The Mole Scanning Service is suitable for persons aged 18 years and over. If you are concerned about a mole or pigmented skin lesion on a person aged 17 years or younger we recommend that you speak to your GP.

Please note that we cannot scan moles or pigmented lesions when these are located on certain parts of the body, including:
- an intimate area of the body (e.g. genitals, nipple)
- the eyelid
- the tip of an ear
- a tattoo

We may not be able to scan moles or pigmented lesions when these are covered by an excessive amount of hair.

Makeup & fake tan should be removed.

We cannot scan a mole or pigmented lesion that is wet, open or bleeding.

If any of these exclusions apply to you and you are concerned about your mole, please see your GP for help.

Skin Cancer

Did you know? Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Northern Ireland.

Approximately 4,000 people develop skin cancer each year (both melanoma and non-melanoma), accounting for over 30% of all cancers diagnosed here (taken from: cancerfocusni.org/cancer-prevention/care-in-the-sun).

Across the UK, it's the 2nd most common cancer found in 20-40 year olds (Cancer Research UK).

Regularly checking your body is important, as it helps you know what your moles look like. Check for anything that changes or is new, such as:

1) a new mole that looks different from your other moles;
2) a new flaky patch that may be a little raised (can be red, or a darker colour);
3) any change in size, shape, colour or feel of a mole;
4) a sore or scab that doesn't heal. It may also occasionally bleed;
5) a new flesh-coloured lump.

If you have concerns regarding a mole or lesion on your body, you should have this checked.
